Recent headlines proclaim the new 'golden era' of agriculture with skyrocketing grain prices and rising net farm income. But, the pork industry continues to struggle with losses. Why is the U.S. and Nebraska pork industry struggling? In an effort to bring some clarity to this issue, we have compiled a situation analysis that hopefully helps to bring some comprehension to the current crisis facing our industry.

The National Pork Board is a 15-member body established by Congress under the provisions of the Pork Promotion, Research, and Consumer Information Act of 1985 that has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion, and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public.
Through a legislative National Pork Checkoff, the pork producers invest $.40 for each $100 value of hogs sold. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail, and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, technology, swine health, and pork safety.
For information on Checkoff-funded programs, pork producers can call the Pork Checkoff Service Center at (800) 456-PORK, or check their website at www.pork.org.

The Nebraska Pork Model gives potential and existing pork producers a way to strive in creating systems of production that are economically, environmentally, and socially acceptable for our world today. It also provides opportunities for the next generation farmer to stay on the family farm without gaining more cropland in able to do it. The Nebraska Pork Model gives producers good ways for keeping an environmentally friendly operation. The model also helps give producers ways to keep good relations with neighbors and keep their surrrounding communities strong.
To request a free copy of the Nebraska Pork Model, call the NPPA office at (888) 627-7675 or email the NPPA office at nppa@nepork.org, and staff will send the booklet to you through the mail. Along with the paper version of the Model, 4 CD's are included to provide further information.
There's also a financial component that consists of worksheets for four scenarios to help producers project the differences between input costs and projected gross income. The worksheets are designed to be able to input individual data specific to any producers situation. The four finishing scenarios are owning/operating a grow-finish facility, owning/operating a wean-to-finish facility, contracting a wean-to-finish facility, and contracting a grow-to-finish facility.
