Environmental Stewardship

National Environmental Stewardship Award

The Pork Checkoff and the National Hog Farmer magazine award U.S pork producers the Environmental Stewardship Award.

The Pork Checkoff with National Hog Farmer magazine annually partners together to recognize U.S. pork producers who serve as examples of the hard work and serious committment to practicing environmental stewardship by the vast majority of the nation's pork producers.

The 2010 deadline has passed, but NPPA encourages all pork producers to work on their operation in preparation for the 2011 Environmental Stewardship.

The purpose for the awards program is to promote those farms who are going above and beyond to ensure that the environment across the nation is sustained while also promoting pork production. All production facilities are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The 2008 National winners were chosen by the National Pork Board and included two from Nebraska: Enterprise Nurseries of Madrid, Neb. and O'Neel Farms of Friend, Neb. The other two winners were from Missouri and Minnesota.

Carbon Footprint

Pork production’s carbon footprint is a small fraction of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Animal agriculture as a whole contributes a small part of U.S. GHG emissions. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2007 only 2.8 percent of U.S. GHG emissions came from animal agriculture and pork production contributes even less--a mere one-third of one percent (0.33%) of total U.S. GHG emissions. Carbon-Conscious Economy Impact

This document explains how the trend toward a carbon-conscious economy may impact the pork industry, and how addressing a swine operation’s carbon footprint can lead to greater efficiencies, reduced costs of operation and an improved bottom line. This effort is consistent with the pork industry’s on-going commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. MORE... (pdf file)
